FENG SHUI - YIN YANG SYMBOL

What is Yin Yang Symbol
The most well-known of Taoist visual symbols is the Yin-Yang symbol, also known as the Taiji symbol. The image consists of a circle divided into two teardrop-shaped halves one white and the other black. Within each half is contained a smaller circle of the opposite color. In a nutshell, Chinese Yin Yang symbols represent perfect balance. For example, evil results from an imbalance in Yin and Yang, and good comes from the two being in harmonic balance.
The meaning of the characters for yin and yang has more than just one connotation. Basically interpreted, yang means "sunny", so it corresponds to the day and more active functions. Whereas yin, means "shady", and corresponds to night and less active functions. According to yin yang philosophy the universe, and everything in it, is both constant and cyclical. One force dominates and then it is replaced by the opposing force. This activity continues constantly and repeats itself over time.

Examples illustrating the philosophy of yin yang include:
Life and death
Heaven and earth
Night and day
Dark and light
Health and sickness
Poverty and wealth
Cycle of the seasons - Cold to hot
Female and Male
Passive and active
Tiger and dragon

The Outer Circle
The outer circle of the yin yang sign represents everything in the universe and the universe itself. It encompasses the duality of everything that exists.

The Black Section
The black area represents yin with the following characteristics:
Feminine, Passive, Intuitive, Delusion, Moon, Dark, Cold, Submission, Contracting, Downward, seeking, Downward movement, Night, Soft, Stillness, Rivers.

The White Section
The white area represents the yang with the following characteristics:
Male, Active, Logical, Enlightenment, Bright, Sun, Light, Creation, Dominance, Upward movement, Strong, Hot, Expanding, Hard, Movement, Mountains

The Black and White Section Together
Together the black and white areas represent the interaction of the energies found in all things. They illustrate the cyclical nature of yin and yang and all that it represents.

They are also called the dragon horse and share with the other symbols of Feng Shui the hope that their presence will enhance the owner’s luck and fortune. One of the common folk tales about the Chi Lin is that whoever dares to look into the Chi Lin’s eyes will be immediately brought happiness and good fortune. Other attributes assigned to their symbol include: confidence, fortitude, ambition, fearlessness, sound well-being and great endurance.

The Chi Lin's presence is said to attract the powerful cosmic breath of the dragon, which promises good omens, prosperity, success, longevity, wisdom, compassion and illustrious offspring. In Feng Shui the Chi Lin has a very important role as a protector of your home or office. It is used to counteract the destructive energy of the Three Killings.  Placing 3 Chi Lin in the direction of the Three Killings will restrain and prevent the killing Chi from harming you.

3 Chi Lins when wrongly placed
The Three Killings refer to three Violent Robbers; the combination of Age Killing (Sui Sha), Plundering Killing (Jie Sha) and Calamity Killing (Zai Sha), who inhabited the mountainous regions. When Three Killing are wrongly activated or disturbed it can bring about three types of misfortunes:
1- Financial loss/lawsuits, loss of wealth, robbery and theft.
2- Illnesses, blood related injuries
3- Accidents/arguments, calamities, destitution and fatalities.

Placement instructions of 3 Chi Lins
  1. Any form of noisy renovations such as banging and nailing, re-decorating, disturbing the earth, digging holes or foundations, or any maintenance work with noisy equipment inside or outside must be avoided in the section affected by the three killings.
  2. One should also not sit with its back to the 3 Chi Lins.
  3. It is best to confront them directly. This means if it occupies the North then you must face the North.
  4. You must not have North behind you.  Having the three killings behind you is asking to be stabbed in the back.
  5. So you must always rearrange your furniture each New Year so that you do not inadvertently have the three killings behind you.
